SATC2 the Movie

by Carol, posted in Self

Yes, I’m one of those overly obnoxious SATC fans. My bachlorette party and my bridal shower was all Sex & the City themed!!  (OK but remember this was 3 years ago when SATC was a bit more fresh!) I memorized every episode and almost every line & phrase… I don’t know whether to be proud of that or not, but I just want to get that out of the way before I review this movie!

I watched the movie with a girlfriend on opening night. Standing out in the pouring rain & thunder in my Manolos, I felt like a true fan!

*SPOILER ALERT*….. don’t read this if you haven’t seen it… or unless you don’t care…

Overall, I left that the movie was….. pretty freaking bad. From the beginning, I felt like something was just OFF.  The quality of the film seemed poor. The scene cuts were edited really abruptly…. and their makeup was really bad!! I felt like they were trying TOO hard to be their own character when it should have been more natural. I was literally thinking “OH GEEZ” during the Single Ladies routine.  Did I really want to watch Liza Minnelli (a grandma) do this already old & overdone routine? For the full song?

I felt that the “problem” of the movie wasn’t as dramatic or central as the first movie. In fact, it made me really appreciate the first movie even more! The heart & soul of SATC is how girlfriends are DOWN and totally there for each other whenever their worlds come crashing down. When they cried, you cried with them and for them. The 2nd movie just didn’t have that factor. Their problems seemed insignificant. The extravagant-ness was a little bit TOO extreme for me. I felt like their giddyness and clapping and smiling whenever they got another extravagant perk was kind of cheesy.  When Carrie strutted around at her home in her 5 foot long train…. err…. it was just odd. They were portraying her in 2 extremes: as a down to earth gal, but at the same time someone who plows around in couture gowns at home.  Huh?? Who are you Carrie?

About Aiden: I thought they brought him back only to please a certain audience. I thought it was a little unnecessary.

The ending: uhhh Mr. Big giving Carrie a diamond because she kissed another man? YEAH THAT’S FAIR. And realistic!!! WTF.  Even though it made him look SO good and understanding, I felt a little bit like rolling my eyes. Cheat and a man will punish you with a brilliant diamond ring. Yes, cuz we live in a world like that! (Oh and playing “True Colors” in the end felt really weird!! Of all the songs to choose from!)

Good things: There were some parts I did like. I felt Charlotte’s pain when she was crying in the closet. I always felt like she was a great “crier.”  I liked how she asked “But doesn’t it hurt your feelings that he wants time off?” SATC is full of really simple questions like that — that can penetrate the heart. And of course it felt good to just see them all together again. I will also always support and watch anything related to SATC just because I love the show so much.  I’m hating the 2nd movie only because it had SO MUCH potential and I feel like they failed because they spread themselves too thin.  I kind of hope this is the last movie! They are just getting too old! I want my last memories of them to be good ones!

Superficial stuff:
Miranda: why does she have NO eyebrows most of the time? During the flashback, I felt like her eyebrows were pencil thin!!
Charlotte: she looked the best and most like her old self out of the everyone
Carrie: LOOKS SO OLD throughout the entire movie! She only looked OK when she was meeting up with Aiden…
Samantha: She definitely got “bigger” but of course she looks damn good for her age! But ahhhhh she’s getting closer to 60 and that’s like my mom’s age!! Kinda scary!!

Last notes: One of the best parts about SATC was that it was based in New York City. It’s one of the reasons why I love living here! But I didn’t get the NYC vibe at ALL from this movie.  Sad!!

OMG carol! I COMPLETELY agree with you! You pretty much took all the words out of my mouth. I left feeling so disappointed…like I just sat through a cheap knock off of the original. Something was off once the beginning credits started rolling.
I want them to do another movie, only to redeem the mess of the sequel…but then again you do have a point with the age issue…

hehe that’s true… maybe if they can make it happen and do it RIGHT, I would gladly accept a 3rd movie!
