Here’s an article that breaks down the 5 basic types of skin:

  • Type 1: Oily Oily skin tends to shiny with enlarged pores, and is prone to blackheads and blemishes. You might experience some tightness.
  • Type 2: Combination/normal This skin type has medium pores, a smooth and even texture, good circulation, healthy color, may tend toward dryness on the cheeks while being oily in the t-zone.
  • Type 3: Sensitive Sensitive skin tends to be thin, delicate with fine pores. It flushes easily, is prone to broken capillaries, is frequently allergic and can be rashy.
  • Type 4: Dry Dry skin feels tight, especially after cleansing. You have a tendency towards fine wrinkles, flaking and red patches. In women of color, skin may appear ashy or dull from dead skin buildup.
  • Type 5: Aging or sun-damaged This skin also feels tight with visible wrinkles, slack skin tone — especially around the cheeks and jawline — with leathery texture and broken capillaries.

After years of thinking that I have only Dry type of skin, I was recently told by a very convincing facialist that my skin is actually more on the sensitive side, more than the dry side. INTERESTING….

When I first sat down with her, she asked “what type of products do you use? what skin type do you shop for?”  I said right away “for dry skin.”  After taking a thorough look at my skin under the crazy bright lights, she said “you actually have very sensitive skin. Your skin is very clear but thin.” Actually, that part about my skin being “thin” made a lot of sense to me.  I get rashes pretty often and my skin gets irritated easily. But I would have never guessed that meant my skin is more sensitive than the average person!  I do have blackheads and she said that blackheads form when you have oily skin… so I guess I have some oily spots on my face.

Now that I think of it…. my tattoo hurt more than anything in the world. Bikini waxes are like… ridiculously painful to me no matter how many times I get it.  So overall, my skin has no pain tolerance and is very sensitive! I will now shop for sensitive skin type of products.

Of course, she recommended that I still use moisturizers and sun block on a daily basis. That will be the case for all skin types!

So which skin type(s) do you have??

I have a oily nose with blackheads and enlarged pores. But my cheeks, chin and forehead are usually not that oily. Are there any advice or tips to keep my nose less oily and prevent blackheads? And to minimise my pores?
