I really needed a haircut, so I Yelped the salons in my area and made an appointment with Extravaganza Hair Designs on the Upper East Side. You get a $20 haircut when you mention Yelp!
So when I first walked in I was greeted by a bored looking receptionist and waited for about 10 minutes. My stylist was Liana and she was really friendly and seemed to be confident in her skills. I let her know right away that I would be doing a review for the salon so I was hoping that she would give me a great haircut!
I told her that I wanted to keep my hair long but she told me that she needed to cut off the dead ends. Honestly, I feel like she did cut off a little bit too much for my comfort:
MUCH shorter right? This was just for a trim! I think I lost a good 2-3 inches.
The thing that I really didn’t like is that I kept mentioning the $20 haircut from Yelp and they all seemed to have no idea what I was talking about. I had to show them on my phone to convince them that it was for real. They seemed to frown upon it and THEN they asked me if they wanted me to “get a blowdry” and of course, I was thinking “I’m not going to walk out with my hair wet!” So they blowdried my hair and charged me $35 for it!!! So basically the $20 haircut + $35 ended up being $55 total, and not including tip. BOO.
The styling wasn’t even anything special! She spent like 5 minutes putting gel in my hair and scrunching it, which is exactly what I do at home. I was kind of annoyed that they just threw that in there when they knew I came specifically for the $20 haircut…sneaky!! So with her $10 tip I spent $65. I typically tip the shampoo girl but she was SOOOO BAD!! I was scared every second of the shampooing, which sucks because I usually love that part! The shampoo girl was the same bored looking receptionist and I felt like a 4th grader was washing my hair. Strands of wet hair kept slapping against my face so my makeup was streaky afterwards.
Liana was really nice, I give her that, but I don’t think I will be going back. They really should have made the experience so I’d give a great review, but it was not impressive at all. Remember if you go back for the $20 haircut, you will really have to prove the deal somehow AND be careful for the $35 “styling” fee!!
