Dear Miss E:
“What type of perm did you get, and what type of hair do you have? I wish there was one solution to this, but it totally depends! =)Typically, with any type of curly perm, your hair will always be frizzy. And by that I mean little squiggles of hair all over the place–very different from regular straight hair! It’s the one thing you just get used to. Have you had a perm before or was this a one-time weird reaction?
Also, do you use mousse or gel at all? When I had really curly permed hair, I used a bit of mousse mixed in with a dab of water and just gently used it for the ends of my hair. Let me know those things and maybe I can help you out a bit more! But I know all about permed hair so ask me anything!

Dear JAC:
“My hair is normally regularly straight but this is my third time getting a “setting” perm. In the past, the curls would fall naturally and not frizz. I dunno if it’s the humidity but this time around, it’s all over the friggin’ place, like little strays and all. =( I did gel it after wetting it but it didn’t seem to help. Should I blow dry it differently or something??I’m exgaggerating but I remind myself of Monica from Friends when they went to Barbados!!!!! OY.”

Dear Miss E:
“It really may be the humidity (although I have no experience with this, since I just moved here from California where we have NO humidity!) so I guess you can try out a few things.Do you blow dry it at all? Blow drying would help calm it down but have you ever tried using a diffuser? You’re supposed to use that with curly hair (but I think for really curly hair) but you can give it a shot.
You should definitely use products in your hair when it’s still damp, so that it can control it in it’s weakest state. I don’t typically like using gel because it gets crunchy and it’s hard to control the even-ness of it. How about using some mousse mixed with water? If it’s REALLY getting that big (like Monica!) then try putting products near the roots of your scalp, in the middle and NOT at the very top layer of your hair. You would need to put the product everywhere to calm it down. Mousse isn’t as crunchy as gel and it’s softer, better for summer curls. Try Treseme as the brand for starters, and if you like it better I can recommend some better quality products!”

Dear JAC:
“Thanks for the tips! I think I just needed to get used to this perm.

I did what you said about using mousse and running it through my hair… it helped a lot!I really appreciate it and hope to meet you one of these days!!”
