This is my favorite part about applying makeup on someone, applying the foundation!~ Laying down a flawless foundation is so key to making or breaking a look and here are a few of the pointers I’ve picked up along the way. These are tips from SHISEIDO, artists through youtube, friends, internet etc. I wanted to summarize them to make it comprehensive and easy to use.

STEP 1: CLEANSE – applying makeup to clean skin is 1 of the key pointers to helping the make up last long.
STEP 2: SKINCARE – after you’ve applied your skin care, let it sit for a bit (3 – 5 minutes) to allow you skin to absorb everything. You don’t want to apply foundation on top of a layer of lotion. You want to apply it to your skin.
STEP 3: PRIMER – using a primer under your foundation will allow your skin to be used as a smooth palette. Primers smooth out your skin tone and surface.

Foundation is exactly as the word implies : it is the foundation (basis) for a beautiful face. The purpose of foundation is to even out the skin tone and hide imperfections. Its purpose is not to disguise the face, draw attention to inevitable flaws, or even shock the viewers. STEP 5: SET WITH POWDER – this will help the foundation stay put.
- APPLICATORS -
: For liquid, cream, concealer, stick type :
1. Sponge Wedge – you can use the sponge dry or wet. Soaking the sponge will prevent the sponge from absorbing the foundation in the sponge so you end up using less product. NEVER smear the product on your face but dab to blend.
2. Foundation brush (painter’s brush) – I personally like using the brush on older skin. Helps me to get product into fine lines. CONS: if it’s not blended well, you can leave streaks all over your face
3. Stippling brush – (a.k.a. Skunk tail brush) the dual layer of synthetic hairs allows for brush to really get into areas other applicators can’t. Also, the motion of stippling creates an airbrushed finish
4. Fingers – yep! you can even use your fingers. The warmth in fingers will help mold the foundation to your face. (I don’t recommend this if you’re a makeup artist applying it on a client)

5. Sponge puff – the puff will get the minerals into itself to release as you puff it onto your face
6. Powder brush – apply in a circular motion for light coverage and dab on for heavier
