I got suckered into buying 2 salon packages for $60 by a street man. I figured– hey, $30 per person isn’t so bad. I’ve wasted more money than that before! (Ok, that’s a really bad mentality) I thought this would make a great salon review, since the package came with a wash, haircut, color consultation, image consultation (whatever that meant) a facial and massage. The salon also looked beautiful from the pictures! Here’s the salon…
C’s treatment of the day:
I told my person straight up that I was reviewing her and the salon–hoping that she’d give me the best of the best treatment. After I got my hair washed by the Shampoo Girl, my lady started chopping away my hair for my trim. I was getting nervous looking at the layers on the ground because I have very thin and very little hair. I asked a lot of questions about hair styling and products, but I didn’t agree with everything she said.
For example:
Me: “I noticed that you’re parting my hair in the middle… can I part it to the side instead?”
Her: “No, it’s genetic. There’s nothing you can do about the way your hair is parted. You can thank someone in your family for that!”
My thoughts: Hmm….This is the first time I’ve ever heard this! How is it that I’ve parted my hair sideways many times? My old stylist back in CA would tell me that you can train your hair by blowdrying it a certain way when it’s wet, pinning it with a bobbypin while you’re sleeping, and getting it trimmed a certain way. I really hate the way my hair looks when it’s split down the middle!

I noticed that my head was ITCHING like crazy after I left the salon. After I saw this video clip, I realized it was because she was teasing my hair very, very hard. That part of my scalp felt like it was on fire! They were very rough in the way they shampoo, cut and styled my hair.
J’s treatment of the day:
Since J has jet black long straight hair, she got talked into getting hilites that ended up costing an extra $120. I heard J keep saying “Please don’t give me yellow streaks– I hate yellow hi-lites! I just want something SUBTLE.” Her sweet and adorable stylist assured her that she was giving her very subtle brown hi-lites to just brighten up her hair for the summer.
Here’s J with tons of foil in her hair!

what a funny girl
Since I finished before J, I watched silently in horror when the foil was removed. I didn’t say a word because I didn’t want to frighten J… but…. is this what subtle is??

J's finished back hair
I thought my curls were a bit weird looking. I was kind of scared while she was curling my hair because she was so close to my roots! The blow dryer was also setting off crazy smoke so I felt like my hair got a little fried. =/

Here’s my Yelp review about the Alfangi Salon in Manhattan. I should definitely check out reviews before I purchase certificates from the streets! Even for $30, it’s just not worth it to get your hair fried or suckered into spending $120 for yellow hi-lites!!

Here in San Francisco, it’s pretty much “don’t buy anything off the street.” There’s way too many shady places out there. Thank God your hair didn’t fall out or your hair didn’t completely fry.
